SJCC’s Standouts Shine in a Challenging Season
San José City College weathered a demanding 2025 campaign, but several Jaguars emerged as clear statistical leaders on offense, defense, and special teams, highlighting individual progress and competitive resilience throughout the year.
CHAVEZ LEADS AIR AND GROUND ATTACK
Quarterback Cedeno Chavez was the centerpiece of the Jaguars' offense, posting the most productive passing and rushing totals on the roster. Across eight games, Chavez threw for 1,248 yards, averaging 156.0 yards per game, while completing 52 percent of his 254 attempts. He accounted for eight touchdowns through the air and added 253 rushing yards, good for 31.6 yards per game, ranking him among the most dynamic dual-threat quarterbacks in the region.
Chavez's season highlight included a 19-for-29 outing in a single appearance, throwing for 140 yards at a 65.5% clip. Despite occasional turnover struggles, his consistency and workload kept the Jaguars competitive week to week.
Behind him, Gage Houser contributed efficiently in limited action, completing 55.6 percent of his throws for 169 yards and adding 22 yards rushing, while Joey Campagna posted 84 passing yards and one rushing score across six games.
FUSSELL AND ANDERSON POWER THE SKILL POSITIONS
Running back Joey Fussell Jr. emerged as SJCC's most reliable and explosive runner. Over seven games, Fussell totaled 365 rushing yards—a strong 52.1 yards per game—with a long of 66 yards and two combined rushing touchdowns across separate splits. His downhill style and ability to break chunk gains distinguished him as the Jaguars' top backfield threat.
Complementing him, Nathaniel Garcia flashed explosiveness with 171 total rushing yards across two stat lines, including an impressive 42.0 yards per game stretch. Elijah Walker and Maynard Lorenzo also contributed steady rotational carries.
The receiving corps found its anchor in Riley Anderson, whose blend of reliability and big-play ability made him a standout target. Anderson posted 338 receiving yards on 37 catches, good for 37.6 yards per game, including a 76-yard highlight play. Adding another 39-yard single-game burst, Anderson finished with an all-purpose total of 765 yards, the most on the team.
Receiver Austin Price delivered another consistent season, amassing 263 yards across nine games with a long of 30, while Jaalen Mhoon posted the team's second-best yards-per-game rate at 59.4, totaling 297 yards with two touchdowns in just five appearances. Tight ends Cody Ahola (117 yards, 2 TDs) and Zach Pallach (100 combined yards, 1 TD) added productivity in the middle of the field.
DEFENSIVE LEADERS ANCHOR THE JAGUARS
The Jaguars' defense saw several standouts emerge, highlighted by linebacker and secondary production. Joshua Reyes led the team in total tackles with 58, averaging 5.8 per game, while adding two sacks and a forced fumble.
Close behind was linebacker Sylus Stender, who delivered 31 total tackles, and defensive back Isaiah Barrett, who accumulated 32 combined stops with 2.0 tackles for loss.
Defensive lineman Loni Ongolea Jr. put together one of the strongest front-line campaigns for SJCC, posting 33 total tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks, making him one of the most disruptive defenders on the roster.
Freshman DB Shamar Matthews contributed both in coverage and pursuit, totaling 17 tackles, 2 interceptions, and 27 return yards, while linebacker Mario Garcia added 32 total tackles, including 2.5 TFLs.
SPECIAL TEAMS REMAINED A BRIGHT SPOT
Kickers Jineen Laimon and Aiden Mulcahy delivered steady accuracy throughout the season. Laimon finished perfect on extra points (7-for-7) and hit her lone field-goal attempt, while Mulcahy connected from a long of 35 yards and delivered consistent depth on kickoffs.
Despite the team's overall record, SJCC's statistical leaders showcased talent, growth, and next-level potential—key building blocks as the Jaguars look toward the 2026 season.
