Laney College used a relentless ground attack and a stifling defense to overpower San José City College, 48–7, Friday night at Laney Stadium in Oakland.
The Jaguars (1–8, 0–4 Bay 6 Conference) struggled to find rhythm against a dominant Laney front, managing just 180 total yards of offense and converting only one of 13 third-down attempts. The Eagles (3–6, 2–2 Bay 6) controlled the clock and the line of scrimmage, piling up 585 total yards—277 on the ground and 308 through the air—while holding the ball for more than 37 minutes.
Laney Controls Early, Never Looks Back
Laney opened the scoring midway through the first quarter when Marcus Jones capped a 35-yard drive with a five-yard touchdown run. The Eagles added 17 points in the second quarter—highlighted by quarterback DJ Duran's 25-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Alexander with six seconds left in the half—to take a commanding 24–0 lead into the break.
The hosts extended the advantage in the third quarter with a 33-yard scoring run from Khairee Baker and a 50-yard touchdown strike from Duran to DaVeonne Sanders, pushing the margin to 38–7 entering the fourth. Duran finished 8 of 16 passing for 208 yards and three touchdowns, while Jones totaled 43 rushing yards and also caught a 42-yard touchdown pass in the final quarter.
Anderson Provides Bright Spot for Jaguars
San José City's lone touchdown came in electrifying fashion when quarterback Cedeno Chavez connected with Riley Anderson for a 72-yard strike early in the third quarter. Anderson, who led SJCC with 81 receiving yards on four catches, sprinted past defenders down the right sideline for the Jaguars' only score of the night.
Kicker Jineen Laimon added the extra point—continuing her historic season after becoming the first woman in program history to score points in a home game earlier this year.
Chavez finished 11 of 28 for 123 yards and a touchdown, while Joey Fussell Jr. led the ground game with 31 rushing yards.
Defensive Standouts
Linebacker Joshua Reyes led SJCC's defense with eight tackles, a sack, and two tackles for loss. Jess Ringel added four tackles and a sack, and Shamar Matthews recorded an interception with a 20-yard return.
Despite the strong individual efforts, Laney's balanced offense wore down the Jaguars over time. The Eagles' defense, led by KP Hampton-Purifoy (two sacks) and Tony Hamilton (one sack for 17 yards), held SJCC to just 2.3 yards per rush and 4.0 yards per pass play.
