Cabrillo Rallies Past San José with Six-Run Fifth
SAN JOSE — Trailing by five runs after the first inning, the Cabrillo Seahawks erupted for six runs in the fifth and held on to defeat the San José City College Jaguars 9-5 in softball action Thursday at San José.
The Jaguars jumped on Cabrillo starter Danielle Keller immediately, sending her to the dugout without recording an out. Jaelynn Corona stole home on an unearned run to open the scoring, and Belle Walker followed with a two-run double to center that plated DJ Martinez and Arianna Vergara. Angelina Castro then singled to right to score Makenna Sieling, and Izzy Gutierrez grounded out to push Walker home, capping a five-run first inning and seemingly putting the game out of reach early.
Keller's replacement, Makayla Ogan, kept San José off the board for the next six innings.
Cabrillo chipped away in the third when Charileen Pauneto singled home Janessa De La Cruz to make it 5-1, then blew the game open in the fifth. Ariyah Morgan's two-run double tied the game at five before Bailey Fulton launched a three-run home run — the decisive blow of the afternoon — to give the Seahawks a 6-5 lead. Kaylen Wingerd added another run on a groundout to cap a six-run frame.
The Seahawks tacked on two more in the sixth on an error and a Nick Powell RBI single.
Ogan earned the win, tossing seven innings of relief and allowing just three hits. She walked one and struck out one.
Sieling absorbed the loss for San José, falling to 0-2. She allowed four earned runs on six hits in 3⅔ innings, with three strikeouts.
Walker finished 2-for-4 with two RBI to lead San José at the plate. Fulton paced Cabrillo with a home run and three RBI, while Morgan drove in two.
San José committed five errors, a factor that contributed to three unearned Cabrillo runs.
